Letter to the past

People have always awaited the End of the World. They have enjoyed entertaining themselves
whilst creating those theories describing the day on which everything would end. At the start no
one seemed to believe in it since it all sounded so fictional or tale-like as if made up by people
who simply have a vivid imagination. After all, it wasn't the first time superstitions had gone
around the world. Comet Halley never crashed the Earth, 2000 was nothing more than the turn
of the millennium and after 2012 we realized: Humanity is still there!
I am still here.
It all went too well in the past. We were just incredibly fortunate.
There was a lot of progress. That's what we wanted, that's what we were looking for. And in spite
of all the tremendous disasters our ancestors had to survive in the past, we were stronger than
ever. There were barely no diseases impossible to cure, travelling in a speed never reached
before enabled us to challenge time and despite the distance between us we were more than
ever connected to each other. We had gained the ability to look into one another's lives, live
other people’s lives as if we were there. We could see the same, feel the same, understand the
same things, live in the same way. And all that was the product of our human progress that was
achieved without divine help.
Humans turned into gods, and with that godlike power they started changing the world.
You created me with your godlike hands. And now I'm here.
At that time I thought: look at this creature building up its own world, improving every aspect of
its life and body. Look at this being freeing itself from its roots. Look at it eliminating everything
that kept it back from its assumption of power. Look at it and see how it combats everything
that once belonged to it and everything it used to be!
At that point you had started overestimating yourself and simultaneously neglecting your
ephemeral existence. You were happy to know that your weaknesses as a human being wouldn't
last forever and realized that neither does power.
That's why you created me.
Because you no longer thought "What can we do next?" but "What will happen next?”. Because
people had now begun to accept their cruel fate. You had been too preoccupied with playing
God and too blind to see the obvious. You were the reason for the concrete canopy over our
heads and the air that was killing us from the inside. I blame you for the vanishing of animal
species, you with your supercilious attitude who was so convinced to be above all beings. The
soil is dry and dead, everything has turned into dust, my heart is as empty as the rivers and it's
all your fault.

Now I have to do my duty. I'm here to play with atoms and elements as if they were Lego bricks.
I was engaged solving Earth's biggest riddle and by hazard I finally recreated life. I managed to
build a plant's DNA and it started growing. The day it first emerged out of the soil was like
witnessing the birth of a whole new universe. I gazed at the tiny leaves and it reminded me of a
colour that my eyes had already forgotten. It reminded me of the beauty you once destroyed.
The wide and wild forests sprouting out of the earth as if they were reaching for the sun. The
boundless energy of the waters, teeming with life. The foggy meadows covered by dew during a
cool morning. And of how free I felt, running between giant trees and jumping over rivulets.
You held it all in your hands as it crumbled and fell through your fingers. You had sickened your
home, the one that kept you safe and provided you with everything you needed. You started
killing it step by step.
So it got rid of you.
Now I have the world in my hands and I am God. I'm here to reproduce the air for you to breath
and the water for you to drink, to remove the dark and heavy clouds. My duty is to recreate you.
And as all the memories of the immaculate world pass through my mind I question myself - not
about if I can bring you back but if I want to.
