Cancer

I once knew a woman who had cancer.
When she told me I cried under a laughter.
And tears rolled down my cheeks,
and my arms rolled round her body,
so that my heart may beat for hers.

She once knew a man who had cancer.
She didn't know what to say when he told her.
Only a trembling sound came out,
of her little, sweet, red mouth:
"I love you, I'll stay!"

And once there were parents whose child had cancer.
The child always wanted to become a dancer.
It didn't understand what cancer really meant,
its mother cried out, often late at night,
its father tried to find out, how to make it all right,
but the child, dreamed so bright at night.

How it danced with cancer pirouetts and arebskz,
how it jumped and flew in the corps de ballet.
And when the dance was over
the audience clapped in order
to keep him
proud and smiling
in their hearts.
